PG Karl Madison: Drake Locks Down Point Guard by Dave Telep of Scout.com, September 8, 2009 at 10:54pm ET
Karl Madison Profile
When Mark Phelps sat courtside at the Peach Jam in July watching the St. Louis Eagles, the Drake head coach had his eye on his next point guard. Karl Madison, a 6-foot floor general out of Springfield (Ill.) Lanphier, was the target.
On Tuesday, the Drake Bulldogs got their man.
“They admired me and my relationship with my coach,” Madison said. “They welcomed me and they really showed me how they wanted me. They were really prepared. They had the itinerary ready. They knew what to do. I liked what I saw and I see myself doing the same type of things (their guards go).”
Madison, who went on his first official visit to Drake last weekend, had Northern Iowa, Nevada and SIU-Edwardsville on his mind before committing. He averaged 21 points as a junior and is Lanphier’s first Division I player since Richard McBride signed with Illinois in 2003.
Madison laid out what a great freshman season at Drake would look like. “I’d like to start, I’d like to score a little bit and get a good assist-to-turnover ratio and get my teammates involved. I want to win as much as possible.”
